Cover: In vivo bioluminescence imaging in combination with virally mediated delivery of luciferase reporters enables longitudinal mapping of transcription factor activity in discrete brain nuclei. After viral targeting of luciferase reporters of transcription factor activation to central cardiovascular regulatory nuclei (top, mouse brain section image courtesy of The Mouse Brain Library), bioluminescence measurements may be taken concurrently with physiological assessments, such as arterial pressure (bottom), in the same animal over time. This approach has the potential to reveal novel links between changes in transcription factor activation patterns in the central nervous system and functional physiologic outcomes. For details, see Peterson JR, Infanger DW, Braga VA, Zhang Y, Sharma RV, Engelhardt JF, and Davisson RL. Longitudinal noninvasive monitoring of transcription factor activation in cardiovascular regulatory nuclei using bioluminescence imaging. Physiol Genomics first published January 29, 2008; doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00296.2007.
